At Shimirose, we are obsessed with Shea Butter and its amazing properties. So we’re excited to share that this summer we’ll be offering African Black Soap! There are many benefits with this soap. And in this post, we answer the question what does African Black Soap help with?
History
African Black Soap originates from the Yoruba Tribe in Nigeria, who called it ”Ose Dudu”. ‘Ose’ means soap, where ‘dudu’ means black in Yoruba. As generations passed, this soap it reached Ghana, who refer to the soap as ‘Alata Samina’. It’s thought that Nigerian women introduced African Black Soap recipes to Ghanaians whilst trading peppers. Translating the term ‘Alata Samina’, meaning pepper trader’s soap in Ghanaian dialect.

Ingredients
Shea Butter is a key ingredient in African Black Soap. It helps to relieve itchiness and sooth dry skin. On top of this, traditional African Black Soap also includes cocoa pods, palm oil, and ashes of plantain skins. There are other variations that add ingredients like plantain leaves or tropical honey. As we are a vegan brand, we don’t use honey.
What Does African Black Soap Help With?
African Black Soap helps with skin conditions like hyperpigmentation and stretch marks. It’s also antibacterial and therefore makes a brilliant alternative to chemical cleansers.
Who Can Use African Black Soap?
Anyone with hyper-sensitive skin, with cuts or irritations, shouldn’t use African Black Soap because there may be a burning sensation on the skin due to the strong cleansing properties. Therefore, it’s for people with normal skin, so to speak. Using a moisturiser after the soap, like Shea butter is essential to ensure your skin does not remain dry.
From August 7th, our African Black Soap can be ordered here. You can also get a free sample at our 3 year anniversary!
